When You Reach Me: Yet Another Favorite

This Newberry Medal winner resides on the golden cusp of fantasy and reality. Though it is a book for children, it has important historical context, tackles issues of race, class, and friendship, and makes readers reconsider the people they might call "crazy". Though the setting may seem like reality to the rest of the world, Miranda receives strange notes and begins a fantastical journey while facing typical childhood struggles with her family and peers. I won't go into detail about her journey to avoid spoilers but the mystery of the notes and certain characters pieces together beautifully and so ornately that I had to read it again. But it was so phenomenal that I couldn't wait to do so.
