Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!: A Fun Lesson in Saying No

This Caldecott Honor recipient is both outright and subtly hilarious. Willems' illustrations are minimal but smart and sassy. Although the pigeon only has one eye, readers can tell exactly what he wants and is thinking and doing is which is super important for teaching children visual and emotional literacy. The book features the iconic pigeon utilizing a multitude of begging methods to ask readers to let him drive the bus. This teaches kids how to recognize manipulation and learn to say no but in a fun and silly way. The other books in the pigeon anthology follow a similar format and I recommend them just as highly, especially the one where the pigeon requests a hot dog.
