Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse: Literally Me

If there is any character that most accurately portrays myself as a child, it is Lilly.  She LOVES her clothes and the way they make her feel as well as other sensory stimulations, has specific preferences, is very self-important, has lots of ambitions and ideas and is happy to share them, but, most of all, she loves to show off her flashy new outfits. She also has a hard time with patience, and being considerate. This causes her to get in trouble, and when she does, she gets angry with her teacher whom she loves.

This book is a lesson in self-control, apologizing, and forgiveness. It is best summarized by a quote from Lilly's teacher that my mom says to me even as an adult: "Today was a difficult day. Tomorrow will be better." As a child who had trouble "sitting still" and "behaving" and who had a slightly shorter temper in elementary school, this book really resonated with me. I find it very hopeful. Although Lilly feels awful at some points, she is able to make things right when she is kind and takes responsibility for her actions. This is an incredible message for young kids. The vocabulary might be difficult for early readers but it is a phenomenal book for a parent to read to a child at the end of a hard day. The illustration is very detailed and colorful and focuses heavily on expressions which is also great for emotional literacy. Overall, while this is a personally nostalgic favorite of mine, it has some great lessons for kids who might not have had the best day.
